Castaways Restaurant, Pitsea, Essex - 21st June
A country show - with a difference!
WOW! WOW! WOW! Its fair to say that Glenn has performed in pretty much every style of venue around the world. But every now and then, something really unexpected happens and you learn something new! As you drive into the car park at Pitsea Market, literally a few hundred yards from the A13, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were in the wrong place! On the far side, fronting directly onto the car park is Castaways, and as you walk through the front doors, the the quiet bustle of the local market seems like a million miles away! The place is huge! Narrow but very deep and beautifully decorated and furnished, it just doesn't feel like you're in Essex anymore. Specialising in themed and tribute evenings, tonight we were to be treated to shows by Sarah Jayne as Dolly Parton and our own 'Mr Outrageous' Glenn Rogers performing a more traditional country show. The staff and management are first class .... and there are lots of them! Heading the entertainment proceedings are Hillary and Paul of Hills 'n' Toes, in country and linedance circles this pair are legendary for their fun and social approach, but how would they stand in a, predominantly, non country/linedance environment? The answer quickly became evident ...... superbly! Part of the satisfaction of being a true pro is that you can very quickly adapt to any situation and this pair are, indeed, pro's! As the restaurant filled with 150 (a record house) diners and revellers, Hillary and Paul made themselves busy among the guests gathering information about their expectations of the evening. Dinner was served at about 7.45 with background music supplied by Hillary and Paul which quietly set the mood for the night to come. At 8.45 a figure appeared on stage, dressed all in black and sporting a big black stetson. Could this be The Outrageous Glenn Rogers? Hell YES! Really getting back to his country roots, Glenn certainly looked the part tonight, and the guests who have known him for years seemed delighted at this return to a more traditional style. Its fair to say we are a bit biased I guess, but there is a quality to Glenns voice and personality that still oozes star quality. He delivered a unique show. laced with a couple of linedance classics, but the linedancers present seemed to be able to dance to pretty much the whole set. Glenn performed some new songs from his forthcoming country album and even the staunch non-country parts of the audience couldn't keep still in their seats. All too quickly Glenns part of the show was over and we eagerly awaited the arrival of Dolly. At 9.45, the fanfare struck up and we were introduced to Sarah Jayne as Dolly Parton. This young lady certainly looked and sounded the part! The audience loved her from the second she walked on stage. Sarah is more than a 'vocalist', she performs the whole set 'in character' complete with the Pigeon Forge accent and with the assistance of her husband, Andy, delivered a top drawer show much to the delight of everyone. By the end of her show the crowd were shouting for 'Islands', granted, this was mostly led by the country music and dance fans in the crowd. But with no 'Kenny' it was a bit of a tall order. Hillary saw the opportunity and invited Glenn back on stage to fill the gap and he and Sarah performed a wonderful version of this classic, Bee Gees witten song. Glenn left the stage and Sarah closed her show with the Dolly classic 'Jolene'. The music continued with Hillary and Paul at the DJ console until 1am! For something that started out as something of an 'unknown' we could not fault this evening in anyway. The venue is GREAT! the food was GREAT! The staff are GREAT! The show was GREAT! and we can't wait to go back for more. With lots of other, non country, theme and tribute nights on offer, you really should check this place out. For us, it has all the potential to become another circus tavern, except its better placed for a more family orientated atmosphere. Take a look at their website www.castawaysessex.com and judge for yourself. |
